4 Summer Dental Tips
Summer is full of sunshine, sports, vacations, and more. While it's a time for fun, it’s also important to prioritize your family’s oral health! Whether your family is taking a camping trip, planning a trip to the beach, or going to grandma’s backyard BBQ, a little preparation can go a long way in protecting your teeth.
At Gettysburg Dental Associates, we’re here to help you smile bright all season long. Keep reading for our summer dental tips, including sports safety advice, what to do during a dental emergency, and a useful checklist for your next getaway.
Tip #1: Protect Your Smile with a Mouthguard
Summer is a prime time for outdoor sports, from baseball and biking to skateboarding and soccer. While your family gears up in shin guards and helmets, don’t forget one essential piece of protective equipment: the mouthguard.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends wearing a properly fitted mouthguard to reduce the risk of oral injury while playing sports. They should be worn not just during games but also during practice or casual play. At Gettysburg Dental Associates, we offer custom-fitted mouthguards that provide optimal protection and comfort, particularly for those with braces.
Tip #2: Be Prepared for a Dental Emergency
Accidents can happen, especially during active summer fun. Here are some common emergencies and the steps to take if they occur.
- Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Try to find and save the broken piece.
- Tooth knocked out: If it’s a permanent tooth, gently rinse (don’t scrub!) and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in milk. In either case, call us immediately.
- Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water and check for any stuck food. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the gums.
- Burns from hot food: Cool the area with water and use over-the-counter pain relief as needed. If blisters form, please call us.
Save our office number, 717-334-8193, in your phone and call us in the event of any dental emergency! Keep a small dental emergency kit in your summer bag or car that includes gauze, a small container, salt packets, and over-the-counter pain relievers.
Tip #3: Follow this Dental Packing Checklist
Whether you’re heading to the mountains, the shore, or visiting family out of town, don’t forget to pack for your smile! Here’s a travel-friendly checklist to make dental care easy on the go.
- Toothbrush. Ensure that your toothbrush is dry when packing it. If you can't remember the last time you got a new one, packing for vacation is a great reminder to do so. And don't be afraid to pack a backup as well.
- Toothbrush cover or case. Don't let your toothbrush hang loose in your bag! Uncared-for brushes can carry a variety of bacteria that could harm you or your teeth. Look for a case that has small holes for proper air ventilation.
- Toothpaste. Choose the right one for you and look for traveled-sized options.
- Mouthguard. Remember to bring one if you plan to play sports during your trip.
- Travel floss picks or floss string. You can even take your water floss on the go for extra cleaning power!
- Small dental mirror. This is an optional bonus for those who want to check problem areas while traveling.
When shopping for products, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance for trusted protection.
Tip #4: Stay Consistent for Summer Smiles
Summer break doesn’t mean a break from good habits. After all, you want a great smile in all your vacation pictures! So, remember to stay consistent even when you’re busy.
- It can be easy to forget after a long day out in the sun but brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing daily are the best practices for protecting your teeth.
- Limit sugary drinks and snacks. Make balanced choices and incorporate nutritious foods that are good for your oral health.
- Drink plenty of water. This is not only important for staying hydrated, but it's also great for your smile.
