Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a specialized approach that focuses on correcting improper tongue and facial muscle function. These issues can affect breathing, speaking, eating, and even sleeping. OMT uses exercises to retrain these muscles, creating healthier patterns that support proper oral and facial development. Both pediatric and adult patients can benefit from OMT.

Who is a candidate for OMT?

  • Do you often breathe through your mouth?
  • Do you have trouble swallowing food or drink?
  • Do you grind your teeth at night?
  • Is your tongue resting low in your mouth?
  • Do you snore or have sleep issues?
  • Do you struggle with speech sounds?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, it may indicate that OMT could help improve your quality of life and daily function.

Why do children need OMT?

Your child may benefit from OMT if they struggle with speech clarity, mouth breathing, a sucking habit, or tongue thrust. These habits can interfere with the proper growth and development of facial structures. OMT helps guide the tongue and facial muscles into correct patterns, supporting healthy breathing, speaking, and eating habits as your child grows.

What happens during OMT?

During OMT, you’ll learn simple exercises to improve the strength, coordination, and function of your tongue, lips, and facial muscles. Sessions are customized to meet your needs and may include exercises focused on breathing, swallowing, and posture.

Consistency is key, and our myofunctional therapist will guide you through each step of the process. Together, we'll create lasting habits that support better sleep, speech, and oral function.
