Post-Braces Care 101
You did it! You got through the orthodontic process and are finally ready to show off your straight, pearly whites. Congratulations!
Although you may not realize it, caring for your teeth after braces is just as important as the braces themselves. Let’s explore everything you need to know about post-braces care and what to expect when your braces come off.
Braces Removal Process
Getting your braces removed after years of orthodontic treatment is exciting, but it can also be intimidating – especially for those with dental anxiety. Here’s what you can expect on your big day.
1. Removal. Your orthodontist will start by loosening your brackets using a special metal tool. They will then remove the brackets and wires – which typically come off in one piece. This process is generally quick and painless, but you may feel slight pressure or discomfort.
2. Cleaning. Next, your orthodontist will remove any leftover glue or adhesive residue that may remain on your teeth from the brackets. They will then give you a thorough cleaning, paying special attention to areas that were covered by your braces, as there is likely some plaque buildup in those spots.
3. X-rays and photos. Your orthodontist will likely take a few X-rays and photos to ensure everything still looks good after the braces are removed. These images will be added to your patient file for reference during follow-up appointments.
4. Retainer. Your orthodontist will then fit you for a retainer, which can be permanent or removable, depending on your needs.
The entire removal process should take about one hour, but depending on your circumstances, it could be slightly shorter or longer.
Adjusting to Post-Braces Life
The few days after getting your braces removed can be an adjustment. Here are a few things you should know.
· Your teeth should feel smooth and a bit slimy. If you feel any roughness or raised pieces, let your orthodontist know. There may still be some adhesive residue on your teeth.
· It’s normal to have slight swelling, pain, and light bleeding in the gum tissues after removing your braces. Tell your orthodontist if any of these symptoms last more than a week.
· Your teeth may be especially sensitive during this period. Be cautious when diving into foods like ice cream, hard or sticky candy, and popcorn.
· You may notice some slight discoloration after your braces are removed. Using mouthwash can help fade discoloration over time. If your teeth still aren’t as white as you’d like, teeth whitening may be the answer!
Tips for Long-Term Post-Braces Care
The braces did their job – now, you have to do yours! Keeping up with your oral health after your braces are removed ensures your smile will stay straight and healthy for the rest of your life.
· Wear your retainers. This is essential for straight teeth. If you use a removable retainer, follow your orthodontist’s instructions on how often to wear it. For most, it’s around 22 hours a day – only removing it to eat and brush your teeth. The first 90 days are essential in creating your new post-braces routine.
· Keep your retainer clean. Because you wear it most of the day, bacteria can build up in it. Clean it at the same time you brush your teeth. Brush it with mild soap or retainer cleaner and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, especially if you have a plastic retainer, since it can warp the plastic's shape.
· Don’t develop bad habits. Avoid chewing on things that can damage your teeth or retainer, such as ice or pens. Brush twice and floss once daily.
· Monitor any changes. If you notice any teeth shifting or your retainer feels tight, let your orthodontist know right away.
· Visit your orthodontist for follow-up appointments. After removing your braces, your orthodontist will likely want to see you every few months for the first year to ensure your teeth stay as straight as they left them.
